A tiny, wearable time capsule of motherhood.

Breastmilk Jewellery: The Process, The Emotion, and Why It’s So Special

A tiny time capsule of motherhood: from breastmilk to birthstones, here’s what it’s really like to create a piece of DNA jewellery that holds a little bit of your story.

If you’ve ever thought about turning a piece of your motherhood journey into something you can wear, then breastmilk jewellery might just be the most sentimental thing you’ll ever own. The Spilt Milk Co. makes stunning DNA keepsakes—think rings, necklaces, earrings, and beads —crafted from breastmilk, hair, ashes, embryos, umbilical cords, and more. It’s jewellery, but with heart (and a little bit of science).

This isn’t an ad, just something I wanted to do for myself. As a birthday gift to me, from me, I decided to go through the process with Ashley, the founder of The Spilt Milk Co. to see what it’s really like to have a piece made. Spoiler: It’s a mix of excitement, deep sentiment, and the occasional “oh wow, I’m actually mailing my breastmilk” moment.

So, if you’ve ever thought about getting a DNA keepsake or breastmilk jewellery, this is what to expect —and why it’s worth it.

Scrolling through The Spilt Milk Co.’s collection is a bit like being a kid in a lolly shop —except instead of sweets, you’re picking heirlooms.

What it’s like to create a piece of breastmilk jewellery:

The Spilt Milk Co.

Step One: Choosing the Right Piece

Scrolling through The Spilt Milk Co.’s collection is a bit like being a kid in a lolly shop —except instead of sweets, you’re picking heirlooms. Rings, pendants, earrings, stackers… all customisable, all carrying something deeply personal.

I settled on the Ellie Ring Mini. It’s a dainty, elegant piece that could hold a DNA stone made from my preserved breastmilk and my kids’ hair, alongside their birthstones. A tiny, wearable time capsule, something I could hold onto long after the baby days were behind me.

Ashley walked me through every option—colours, finishes, stone shapes. Did I want shimmer? A pearly sheen? A touch of opal fleck? It was like designing a piece of art, except the medium was my own motherhood journey.

Step Two: Sending Off the Precious Cargo

Then came the emotional bit: bagging up the last of my frozen breastmilk. This wasn’t just any milk—it was the final stash, the last drops of a chapter I had closed. If you’ve ever breastfed, you’ll know that liquid gold is more than just a catchy phrase. Every ounce has a story, a sacrifice, a memory attached to it.

Sealing up that little bag and sending it off felt like a goodbye. But in a full-circle way, it was also a way to hold onto those moments.

Once Ashley received it, she worked her magic—preserving the milk into a fine powder that would last forever. When she sent a little sample back to me alongside the finished ring, I got oddly emotional. It wasn’t just milk anymore. It was a keepsake in the making.

Step Three: The Creative Process

Ashley doesn’t just take your DNA inclusions and churn out a cookie-cutter piece. She works with you to create something meaningful. I got to see sketches of my ring before she started crafting it, making sure every detail was perfect.

The hair placement was delicate, swirled into the breastmilk stone in a way that felt natural and beautiful. The birthstones added colour and sparkle, tying it all together. It was surreal seeing something so personal take shape.

Step Four: The Finished Piece

When the final ring arrived, I couldn’t stop staring at it. It was exactly what I’d hoped for—delicate, timeless, and packed with meaning. The breastmilk stone had a soft, milky glow (pun absolutely intended), and the strands of my kids’ hair were preserved inside like wisps of memory.

Wearing it feels special in a way I didn’t fully anticipate. It’s a reminder of the long nights, the snuggles, the hours spent feeding. A tiny piece of a chapter that shaped me as a mum.

Why It’s Worth It

If you’re on the fence about getting a DNA keepsake, here’s my take: do it. The process is seamless, Ashley is an absolute gem to work with, and the final piece is more than just jewellery—it’s a tangible connection to a part of your journey that’s often fleeting.

Breastfeeding may be over, but this little ring means those moments will always be with me. And honestly? That’s pretty special.

IN LOVE

This piece is absolutely stunning! I honestly don’t ever want to take it off! It’s so special, and I can honestly say it’s now one of my favourite pieces of jewellery (I might even say it rivals my engagement and wedding rings—haha!). The rose gold tone matches my wedding ring perfectly too, which makes it even more meaningful.
